Iran to Launch Public CBDC Pilot:
The Central Bank of Iran (CBI) is launching a national digital currency, the digital rial, in a public pilot targeting domestic micropayments, starting on June 21 on Kish Island.
The pilot will allow bank customers and tourists to use the digital rial for payments by scanning a barcode, providing an additional payment method alongside cash and bank cards, and enhancing payment security and ease.
The digital rial aims to develop Iran’s digital economy and improve micropayments, but it will be used exclusively within Iran’s geographical boundaries, with the government maintaining a mixed stance on cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and regulating local crypto mining since 2018.

CEO Philip Belamant highlighted plans to triple sales volumes and achieve capital efficiencies, while CFO Hugh Courtney noted that the financing sets a benchmark for future debt issuance pricing and terms.

Nium Tapped By Air France & KLM For Payments Solution:
Nium, a US-based cross-border B2B payments platform, announced a collaboration with Air France and KLM to enable "closed loop" electronic payments between the airlines and selected travel agents using the Nium Airline Payments (NAP) solution.
NAP, which leverages UATP authorisation rails and bank transfers, aims to simplify reconciliations, expedite settlements, and reduce costs by eliminating intermediaries from the payment flow, initially deploying across Europe starting in Italy.
John Taylor, head of airline payments at Nium, emphasized that payments now play a crucial role in airline distribution and control within indirect sales channels; this partnership follows Nium’s recent $50 million Series E funding round and potential IPO plans for 2025.
